Happy New Year!
As any parent knows, the real new year begins in September with the return of school. Our resolutions reflect the difference: instead of promising to lose 10 pounds and go to the gym every day, we vow that this year we're going to whip the kids into shape: oversee their homework, set the alarm clock earlier, make lunch the night before. Carol Band, our intrepid columnist, has come up with a few creative resolutions for the other people in her life. You can read her suggestions in the new September issue of Bay Area Parent.

1st Annual Kids' Flea Market
Most kids - even those who hate to shop - love to sell and trade their junk, and now they get to do it under the umbrella of a real flea market. Kids ages 12 and younger are invited to clean out their closets and cart everything - old clothes, electronics, sports equipment and school supplies - to the Farmer's Market parking lot behind the Garden Theater, 1140 Lincoln Ave. in Willow Glen. 10.30am-3.30pm, Sun., Aug. 31. Just leave old shoes behind! Free. Sponsored by Powell's Sweet Shoppe, which promises a $5 gift certificate to each participant who brings a card table. Other activities include a Bubble Gum Blowing Contest; Hula Hoop Contest; Cotton Candy Eating Contest and face painting. For more information and to reserve space, call Jamie Dreier at Powell's: 408-279-4090.

Capitola Begonia Festival
This four-day event is a longstanding family tradition, and if you haven't visited before this is the year. The main event, of course, is the nautical parade of floats down Soquel Creek through the middle of Capitola, just south of Santa Cruz. View the construction of floats beforehand, in addition to a sand sculpture contest, chalk art and fishing derby. Enjoy live music on the beach and movies at sundown. Fri., Aug. 29-Mon., Sept. 1. Free. Capitola Esplanade, Stockton Ave. and Riverview Ave., Capitola. 831-476-3566. www.begoniafestival.com.
